What Is a Spot Color (PMS)?

A spot color is a specific, pre-mixed ink color used in printing to achieve an exact hue that cannot be reliably reproduced by combining standard CMYK process inks. In the packaging industry, spot colors are most commonly specified using the Pantone Matching System (PMS) — a universal color language that assigns a unique number to each color, ensuring consistency across different printers, substrates, and production runs.

When you specify PMS 286 on your spec sheet, every printer in the world who mixes that ink will produce the same shade of blue. This level of precision is essential for brand identity. Consumers recognize brands by color — and even a slight shift in hue on a retail shelf can undermine the brand recognition you have worked to build.

At President Container Group, we use PMS spot colors extensively across our flexographic printing operations. Our ink room mixes Pantone-specified formulas for each job, and our press operators use spectrophotometers to verify color accuracy throughout the run.

How Spot Colors Differ from Process Colors

Process color printing (also called CMYK or four-color process) builds a full range of colors by overlaying dots of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black ink. This works well for photographic images and complex gradients, but it has limitations when it comes to matching a specific brand color precisely.

Spot colors, by contrast, are mixed as a single ink before they ever reach the press. The advantages include:

  • Color accuracy — A PMS spot color is the same on every print run, on every press, at every facility. CMYK builds can shift depending on dot gain, ink density, and substrate.
  • Vibrancy — Spot inks can produce colors that fall outside the CMYK gamut, including bright oranges, deep purples, and metallic or fluorescent shades.
  • Consistency on uncoated substrates — Corrugated board is a porous, brown or kraft-colored surface. Spot colors are formulated to compensate for substrate absorption and color, delivering more predictable results than process builds.
  • Cost efficiency for limited color jobs — If your box design uses one or two colors, printing with spot inks is often more economical than setting up a full four-color process run.

Using PMS Colors in Corrugated Packaging

When designing graphics for corrugated boxes, specifying PMS colors correctly is critical. Here are the key considerations our team addresses with every customer:

Substrate Matters

The Pantone system includes separate color guides for coated and uncoated paper. Corrugated board is uncoated, so you should reference the Pantone Uncoated (U) swatch — for example, PMS 186 U rather than PMS 186 C. The same ink formula will appear differently on coated versus uncoated surfaces, and specifying the wrong guide leads to unmet expectations.

Ink Coverage and Opacity

Large solid areas of spot color on corrugated board require careful ink management. The rough, absorbent surface of kraft liner can cause ink to appear mottled if coverage is insufficient. Our press teams adjust ink viscosity, anilox roll selection, and impression settings to ensure smooth, even coverage across the entire print area.

Color Count and Cost

Each spot color requires its own printing station, ink supply, and plate. Most flexographic presses used in corrugated production have between two and six color stations. The number of spot colors you specify directly affects press setup time and cost. Our sales engineers at PCG help customers balance visual impact with production efficiency — sometimes recommending a well-chosen two-color design that looks as striking as a four-color layout.

Proofing and Approval

Before a full production run, we provide printed color samples on actual corrugated substrate for customer approval. Digital screen proofs cannot accurately represent how a PMS color will look on board, so this physical proof step is essential for color-critical jobs. Our Tech-Pak division handles proofing for complex retail displays where color fidelity is paramount.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many PMS spot colors can you print on a corrugated box?

Most of our flexographic presses accommodate up to six colors in a single pass. For the majority of corrugated packaging applications, two to four spot colors provide excellent visual results. Our sales team can advise on the optimal color count for your design and budget.

Can you match a color that is not in the Pantone system?

Yes. If you have a custom color that does not correspond to a standard PMS number, our ink room can work from a physical sample to develop a custom ink formula. We will provide a printed proof on corrugated board for your approval before production begins.

Will my PMS color look the same on corrugated as it does on my business card?

Not exactly. Corrugated board is an uncoated, textured surface — usually brown kraft — so colors will appear slightly different than on smooth coated paper. We always recommend reviewing a printed sample on actual corrugated substrate. Specifying the Pantone Uncoated (U) reference helps set realistic expectations.
