What Is Single Wall Corrugated?

Single wall corrugated is the most widely used construction in the packaging industry. It consists of one layer of fluted corrugating medium sandwiched between two flat linerboard sheets, all bonded together with starch-based adhesive. This three-ply structure — outer liner, fluted medium, inner liner — is the standard material for the vast majority of shipping boxes, retail packaging, and e-commerce containers produced worldwide.

Single wall board typically ranges from 3 to 5 mm in caliper (thickness), depending on the flute profile selected. This construction accounts for roughly 80 percent of all corrugated fiberboard produced.

Flute Options in Single Wall

The performance of single wall corrugated varies significantly based on the flute profile used:

• A-Flute (4.0–4.8 mm): Maximum cushioning for fragile products. Excellent compression strength.
• C-Flute (3.2–4.0 mm): The industry standard. Balanced performance for general shipping. Used in approximately 80 percent of single wall boxes.
• B-Flute (2.5 mm): Thinner and firmer. Good crush resistance and print surface. Ideal for die-cut packaging and canned goods.
• E-Flute (1.5 mm): Fine flute for retail packaging, pizza boxes, and point-of-purchase displays. Superior print quality.
• F-Flute (0.8–1.0 mm): Ultra-thin for lightweight retail packaging and clamshells. Near-paperboard print quality with corrugated strength.

Board Grades and Strength Ratings

Single wall corrugated is available in a wide range of board grades to match your product’s protection requirements. Common grades include 32 ECT (suitable for products up to about 65 lbs), 40 ECT (for heavier products up to 80 lbs), and 44 ECT or higher for the most demanding single wall applications.

Board grade is determined by the basis weights of the linerboard and medium papers used, combined with the flute profile. Heavier papers and specific flute types produce higher-rated boards that can handle greater loads and tougher supply chain conditions.

Single Wall vs. Multi-Wall

Single wall corrugated handles the majority of packaging needs efficiently and cost-effectively. However, when product weight exceeds approximately 60 to 80 pounds, when exceptional cushioning is needed, or when extreme stacking heights are required, double wall or triple wall constructions may be specified.
