What Is an RSC (Regular Slotted Container)?

The Regular Slotted Container, universally known as the RSC, is the most commonly manufactured corrugated box style in the packaging industry. Its design is straightforward: all four flaps on both the top and bottom are the same length, and the outer flaps meet at the center of the box when folded. This efficient design minimizes material waste and keeps production costs low, making it the default choice for a vast range of shipping and storage applications.

RSCs are produced from a single sheet of corrugated board that is scored and slotted on a converting line. The scored lines create the fold points, while the slots allow the flaps to fold without buckling. A glue tab or manufacturer’s joint joins the box into its final tube shape before it ships flat to the end user.

Key Features and Specifications

RSC boxes are always specified by their inside dimensions — length, width, and depth — which represent the usable space within the box. The relationship between these dimensions determines flap coverage. When the length and width are equal, the flaps meet perfectly at center. When dimensions differ significantly, a gap may appear between the inner flaps, though the outer flaps still provide a full closure.

Board grades, flute profiles, and flexographic printing options can all be tailored to your specific requirements. RSCs can be manufactured with single-wall, double-wall, or even triple-wall construction depending on the weight and fragility of the product being shipped.
