What Is Reverse Corrugation?

Reverse corrugation is a construction technique in which the fluted medium faces the inside of the box or display, leaving the smooth linerboard surface on the outside. In standard corrugated fiberboard, the outer liner is bonded to the flute tips, which can create a subtle washboard effect on the surface. Reverse corrugation eliminates this effect by positioning the flutes inward.

This approach is particularly valued in applications where a smooth, flat exterior is essential — such as point-of-purchase displays, premium retail packaging, and branded shipping boxes where high-quality printing is a priority.

How Reverse Corrugation Improves Print Quality

When flexographic or lithographic printing is applied to standard corrugated board, the flute tips beneath the liner can cause uneven ink coverage — a phenomenon known as “flute show-through” or “washboarding.” This is most noticeable in large solid color areas and photographs, where the subtle ridges interrupt the smoothness of the printed image.

Reverse corrugation addresses this by placing the liner’s smooth face outward with no flute tips directly beneath the printed surface. Combined with fine flute profiles like E-flute or F-flute, this technique delivers a printing surface that approaches the smoothness of solid paperboard.

Applications for Reverse Corrugation

Reverse corrugation is commonly used in specialty packaging applications where visual appeal is critical:
