What Is Retail Ready Packaging?

Retail ready packaging (RRP), also known as shelf-ready packaging (SRP), is corrugated packaging designed to transition from shipping container to shelf display with minimal handling by store associates. Instead of unpacking individual products from a case and placing them on the shelf one by one, staff can simply open or tear away a portion of the RRP case and place the entire unit directly on the shelf — products organized, branded, and ready for shoppers to buy.

RRP is closely related to PDQ displays and shipper displays, sharing the core principle of reducing in-store labor while maintaining strong brand presentation. The primary distinction is that RRP is specifically designed to fit within standard retail shelving, functioning as an ongoing product merchandising tray rather than a standalone promotional display.

Why Retailers Demand RRP

Labor is one of the largest operating expenses for retailers, and stocking shelves consumes a significant portion of that labor budget. RRP addresses this challenge by reducing the number of touches required to get products from the back room to the shelf. Major retail chains increasingly require or strongly prefer RRP from their suppliers as a way to control labor costs and improve stocking speed.

Beyond labor savings, RRP improves the shopping experience. Neatly organized, branded packaging on the shelf makes products easier to find and more visually appealing. Well-designed RRP also supports product identification for inventory management and shelf replenishment.

Design Principles for Effective RRP

Successful retail ready packaging must satisfy five key criteria established by retail industry standards:

  • Easy to identify — clear product and brand identification on the outer case for efficient backroom management
  • Easy to open — perforations, tear strips, or fold-down panels that activate cleanly without tools
  • Easy to shelf — dimensions that fit standard retail shelving with a stable, self-supporting structure
  • Easy to shop — product visibility and accessibility for customers, with branded graphics facing forward
  • Easy to dispose — simple breakdown for recycling after the product is sold through

Our President Container design team engineers RRP solutions that meet all five criteria while also providing the shipping protection required for distribution. Die-cutting and scoring create reliable opening mechanisms, and quality printing ensures brand standards are maintained at the shelf level.

Manufacturing at Scale

RRP is produced using standard corrugated converting equipment including corrugators, flexo folder gluers, and die-cutting systems. President Container Group’s 625,000 square feet of production space and two corrugators provide the capacity to support large-scale RRP programs. Our sustainable manufacturing practices, including solar-powered operations and FSC/SFI certification, align with retailer sustainability requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between retail ready packaging and a PDQ?

Retail ready packaging is designed to fit within standard shelf sets as an ongoing product merchandising tray. A PDQ display is a pre-packed display tray that may be placed on shelves, counters, or within larger displays, often for promotional campaigns. Both reduce labor, but RRP is focused on everyday shelf integration.

Do all retailers require retail ready packaging?

While not universally mandated, most major retail chains strongly prefer or require RRP from their suppliers. Requirements vary by retailer, so packaging specifications should be confirmed during the design phase. President Container Group’s team is experienced with the RRP requirements of major national retailers.

Is retail ready packaging more expensive than standard cases?

RRP may have a slightly higher per-unit packaging cost due to additional design features like perforations and print. However, the total cost of getting products to shelf is typically lower when labor savings at the retail level are factored in. Many brands find RRP delivers a strong return on investment through improved shelf presence and reduced retailer chargebacks.
