What Is Corrugating Medium?
Corrugating medium — often simply called “medium” — is the paper that is formed into the wave-shaped flutes at the center of corrugated fiberboard. While it is hidden between the linerboard faces and never seen by the end user, the medium is the structural heart of every corrugated box, providing the compression strength, cushioning, and rigidity that make corrugated packaging so effective.
During manufacturing, flat rolls of medium paper are fed through heated corrugating rolls that shape the paper into a continuous wave pattern. Adhesive is applied to the flute tips, and linerboard is bonded to both sides to create the finished board.
Types of Corrugating Medium
Medium is available in two primary categories based on its fiber source:
- Semi-chemical medium: Made from a blend of virgin hardwood fibers processed through a semi-chemical pulping method. This produces a stiff, resilient paper that holds its flute shape well and delivers excellent compression strength.
- Recycled medium: Manufactured from recovered paper fibers. Modern recycled medium performs well for most commercial applications and supports recycled content goals and sustainability initiatives.
The choice between semi-chemical and recycled medium depends on the strength requirements of the finished packaging and the buyer’s sustainability specifications.
Medium Basis Weight and Performance
Like linerboard, medium is specified by its basis weight — the weight in pounds per 1,000 square feet. Common medium weights include 23 lb, 26 lb, 30 lb, 33 lb, and 40 lb. A heavier medium produces a stiffer, stronger fluted layer that resists flat crush and contributes more to the overall board grade.
The medium weight works in concert with the flute profile to determine the board’s structural performance. For example, a 26 lb medium formed into C-flute produces a different performance profile than the same paper formed into B-flute, because the flute height, spacing, and paper take-up ratio are all different.
The Role of Medium in Board Construction
In a single wall construction, one layer of medium provides the entire fluted structure. Double wall boards use two layers of medium (which may use different flute profiles and weights), while triple wall uses three. Each additional layer of medium adds compression strength and cushioning capacity.
The medium must also form cleanly during manufacturing. It needs the right combination of stiffness (to hold the flute shape) and flexibility (to be formed without cracking). This is why medium paper has different characteristics than linerboard — it is specifically engineered for the corrugating process.
