What Is a Manufacturer’s Joint?

The manufacturer’s joint is the seam where the two ends of a corrugated box blank are joined together to form a tube. This joint is created at the box plant during manufacturing — before the box ships to the end user — and is what allows the flat blank to be erected into a three-dimensional container. The glue tab on one edge of the blank overlaps the opposite edge, and the joint is secured by adhesive, wire stitching (staples), or tape.

The manufacturer’s joint is one of the most structurally important features of a corrugated box. A weak or poorly executed joint can cause the box to fail during packing, shipping, or stacking, regardless of the board grade or box style used.

Joint Closure Methods

There are three primary methods for closing the manufacturer’s joint:

  • Glued joint: The most common method for standard shipping containers. Adhesive is applied to the glue tab and the overlapping edge is pressed and held until the bond sets. Glued joints produce a clean, flat seam that runs smoothly through automated case-erecting equipment.
  • Stitched (stapled) joint: Wire stitches are driven through the overlapping layers. Stitched joints are stronger than glued joints under stress and are preferred for heavy-duty boxes, Gaylord boxes, and Bliss box end panels. However, the exposed staple points can scratch products and make the box less suitable for food or consumer applications.
  • Taped joint: Reinforced tape is applied over the seam. Taped joints are less common in production environments but may be used for specialty applications or field-assembled containers.

How Joint Type Affects Box Performance

The joint method should match the demands of the application. For most RSC shipping cartons, a glued joint provides adequate strength and the cleanest interior surface. For heavy-duty industrial containers where joint failure is a significant risk, stitched joints offer superior shear resistance. The choice also affects compatibility with automated equipment — glued joints generally perform better on high-speed case erectors than stitched joints.

Joint placement matters as well. The manufacturer’s joint is positioned on the inside of the box by default. For applications requiring a smooth interior — such as food packaging — an outside glue tab configuration moves the joint to the exterior.
