What Is Stripping?

Stripping is the process of removing excess corrugated material from around die-cut shapes after the cutting operation is complete. When a sheet of corrugated board passes through a rotary die cutter or flatbed die press, the die cuts the outline of the box blank but leaves the waste pieces, often called chad or trim, still loosely attached to the sheet. Stripping separates these waste pieces from the usable blank so the finished part can move on to folding, gluing, or packing.

Think of stripping like removing a cookie from a sheet of dough after the cookie cutter has done its work. The cut has been made, but someone still needs to lift away the surrounding dough. In corrugated converting, stripping accomplishes exactly this, pulling away the scrap material so only the precisely shaped blank remains.

Stripping may seem like a simple step, but it is critical to production efficiency and quality. If waste pieces are not cleanly removed, they can jam downstream equipment, cause misfeeds in folder-gluers, or end up inside finished boxes, creating quality complaints from customers.

How Stripping Works

Stripping can be performed inline (as part of the die-cutting machine) or as a separate offline operation, depending on the equipment and the complexity of the die-cut pattern.

Inline Stripping

On modern rotary die cutters, a stripping section is built into the machine immediately downstream of the cutting station. This section uses pins, brushes, or rubber ejectors mounted on a cylinder to push the waste pieces out of the sheet as it passes through. The waste falls into a collection bin below the machine, and the clean blanks continue down the line for stacking or further processing.

Inline stripping is fast and efficient, keeping pace with the die cutter’s production speed. However, it requires careful setup. The stripping tools must be positioned to contact only the waste areas without disturbing the finished blank. Complex designs with small internal cutouts, like hand holes or ventilation slots, are more challenging to strip inline because the waste pieces are small and can resist ejection.

Offline Stripping

For very complex die-cut patterns or delicate materials, stripping may be performed manually or on a dedicated stripping machine after the sheets have been die cut. Operators break away the waste pieces by hand, inspecting each blank as they work. This approach is slower but provides the highest level of quality control, making it suitable for short runs of high-value packaging.

Common Stripping Challenges

Several factors can make stripping difficult and lead to production issues:

  • Incomplete cuts: If the die does not cut completely through the board in certain areas, the waste piece remains attached to the blank and resists stripping. This is often caused by worn die rules, uneven anvil surfaces, or incorrect cutting pressure.
  • Small waste pieces: Tiny cutouts, narrow trim strips, and small internal holes are harder to strip reliably because there is less material for the stripping tools to grip and eject.
  • Board condition: Corrugated board that is too moist can be difficult to strip cleanly because the fibers resist tearing. Conversely, board that is too dry may fracture unpredictably, leaving ragged edges.
  • Complex shapes: Designs with curved cutouts, acute angles, or closely spaced cuts require more precise stripping tool placement and may need slower machine speeds.
