What Is a Wrap-Around Blank?

A wrap-around blank is an unglued, die-cut piece of corrugated board designed to be formed around a product or product group by automatic packaging machinery. Unlike a standard box blank that is erected into an empty box before the product is loaded, a wrap-around blank is placed flat, the product is positioned on top, and the machine folds the blank up and around the product, sealing it with hot-melt adhesive in a single continuous operation.

This approach produces a tightly fitted package with minimal void space, reducing material usage and eliminating the need for interior void fill. The die line for a wrap-around blank defines every cut, score, and fold so that the blank wraps precisely around the product dimensions.

Benefits of Wrap-Around Packaging

Wrap-around blanks offer significant advantages for high-volume operations. The tight fit around the product means less corrugated material per package compared to an oversized RSC. The automated forming process runs at high speeds with minimal manual labor. And because the blank wraps snugly around the contents, the package provides excellent protection during transit without additional cushioning or dunnage.

A pre-glued box (such as a knocked-down RSC) arrives with the manufacturer’s joint already sealed. It must be erected, the product inserted, and the flaps closed — three separate steps. A wrap-around blank consolidates these into one machine operation: place, wrap, and seal. This streamlined process reduces labor, speeds throughput, and produces a tighter package.

However, wrap-around blanks require compatible automatic packaging equipment. For operations without this machinery, traditional pre-glued boxes remain the more practical option.
