What Is Water-Activated Tape?
Water-activated tape, also known as gummed tape or reinforced tape, is a packaging tape made from a kraft paper backing coated with a starch-based adhesive. The adhesive is dry and inactive on the roll. When water is applied to the adhesive side, the starch reactivates and becomes extremely sticky. As the moistened tape is pressed onto a corrugated box, the adhesive penetrates the paper fibers of the box surface, creating a bond that becomes permanent as it dries.
This fiber-tearing bond is what sets water-activated tape apart from pressure-sensitive tapes like standard packing tape.
