What Is Warp in Corrugated Board?
Warp is a quality defect in corrugated fiberboard where the board does not lie flat. Instead, sheets or blanks may bow, twist, or curl, making them difficult to feed through converting equipment, case erecting machines, and automated packing lines. Warp is one of the most common quality issues in corrugated manufacturing and one of the most impactful on downstream operations.
Warped board can cause machine jams, misaligned printing, poor box formation, and increased waste — all of which translate into lost productivity and higher costs for the end user.
Types of Warp
Corrugated board can exhibit several types of warp, each with distinct visual characteristics:
- S-warp (diagonal warp): The most common type, where opposite corners lift off the surface in an S-shaped pattern. Caused by uneven moisture content between the linerboard layers.
- Lengthwise bow: The board curves along its length, forming a gentle arc. Often caused by tension differences during manufacturing.
- Crosswise bow: The board curves across its width, perpendicular to the flute direction.
- Twist: A complex warp where the board both bows and rotates, making it impossible to lay flat on any surface.
What Causes Warp
The root cause of warp is almost always a moisture imbalance between the paper components of the board. Because paper is hygroscopic — it absorbs and releases moisture from the air — any difference in moisture content between the inner liner, outer liner, and medium causes differential expansion or contraction, pulling the board out of flat.
