What Is a UPC?

A Universal Product Code (UPC) is a standardized barcode system used to identify products for inventory tracking, retail scanning, and supply chain management. The most common format, UPC-A, consists of 12 numerical digits encoded in a pattern of black and white bars that can be read by optical scanners. UPCs are assigned by GS1, the global standards organization, and each code uniquely identifies a specific product from a specific manufacturer.

In the corrugated packaging world, UPCs appear on shipping cartons (often as ITF-14 barcodes for case-level scanning), on retail-ready packaging for point-of-sale scanning, and on inner packs for distribution center processing. The barcode format and placement depend on where in the supply chain the scanning occurs.

UPC vs. SKU

While both UPCs and SKUs identify products, they serve different purposes. A UPC is a universal, standardized code recognized across the entire supply chain — from manufacturer to distributor to retailer. A SKU is an internal identifier specific to your organization’s inventory system. One product might have a single UPC but different SKUs at different retailers or warehouse locations.

Your corrugated packaging may need to display both: a UPC barcode for scanning at receiving docks and retail checkouts, and a human-readable SKU or item number for internal reference. Both can be incorporated into the box’s print design during the CAD layout phase.

Printing UPCs on Corrugated Boxes

Barcode print quality is critical because a barcode that cannot be scanned creates problems throughout the supply chain. On corrugated packaging, UPCs are typically printed using flexographic printing, which requires careful attention to bar width, contrast, and quiet zones (the blank areas surrounding the barcode). The rough surface of corrugated board and the potential for ink spread make barcode printing more challenging than on smooth substrates.

UPC Placement and Compliance

Where the UPC appears on your box matters. Retail-ready packaging must have the barcode positioned for easy scanning at checkout. Shipping cartons typically place barcodes on the lower right side of the longest panel. Many retailers have specific placement and size requirements documented in their vendor compliance guides.
