Custom Telescope Boxes for Maximum Protection
President Container manufactures two-piece telescope boxes engineered for heavy, fragile, and high-value products.
What Is a Telescope Box?
A telescope box is a two-piece corrugated container consisting of a separate base (bottom) and lid (top). The lid slides over the base in a telescoping fashion — much like a shoebox. This construction creates double-wall protection along the sides where the lid overlaps the base, delivering exceptional stacking strength and resistance to compression during storage and transit.
Both the lid and base are typically manufactured as HSC (Half Slotted Container) components. The base holds the product, and the slightly larger lid fits over it. The depth of the overlap can be adjusted to suit the required protection level and the outer dimensions of the finished package.
When to Specify a Telescope Box
Telescope boxes are commonly specified for products that are too heavy, too fragile, or too valuable for a standard RSC. Flat items like framed artwork, mirrors, glass tabletops, and large printed materials benefit from the uniform clamping pressure that the telescope design provides. Heavy industrial parts, appliance components, and automotive assemblies also frequently ship in telescope configurations.
The two-piece design also makes telescope boxes easy to pack and unpack. Workers can place the product in the base and simply drop the lid over the top — no tape guns, flap folding, or stapling required, which can save labor time on high-volume packing lines.
Telescope Box vs. Other Heavy-Duty Styles
Compared to the Full Overlap (FOL) box, the telescope box provides even greater side-wall strength because of the double-wall overlap zone. Compared to the Bliss box, the telescope design is simpler to assemble and does not require separate end panels. However, the Bliss box may offer better stacking performance for very tall, heavy loads. Your packaging engineer can help determine which style best fits your application.
Custom Telescope Boxes from President Container
President Container designs and produces telescope boxes in any inside dimension and board grade. We can manufacture matched lid-and-base sets with flexographic printing for identification, or with litho-laminated graphics for premium retail presentation. Our Tech-Pak division can also handle assembly and kitting if your telescope box requires interior partitions, foam inserts, or other protective components.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a telescope box in packaging?
A telescope box is a two-piece corrugated container with a separate lid that slides over a base, similar to a shoebox. The overlapping walls provide excellent stacking strength and product protection.
What products are best suited for telescope boxes?
Heavy, fragile, and flat items such as glass, mirrors, framed artwork, appliance components, and industrial parts are ideal candidates for telescope box packaging.
How does a telescope box compare to an RSC?
A telescope box provides superior stacking strength and side-wall protection due to its double-wall overlap, but it uses more material and is a two-piece design. An RSC is more economical for lighter products and general shipping.
