What Are Outer Dimensions?

Outer dimensions are the total outside measurements of a corrugated box — the physical space the box occupies when erected and closed. While corrugated boxes are specified and ordered by their inside dimensions (to ensure the product fits), outer dimensions are what matter for logistics: pallet configurations, trailer loading, warehouse racking, and dimensional weight calculations by freight carriers.

Outer dimensions are always larger than inside dimensions because they include the thickness of the corrugated board walls on all sides, plus the added thickness of the closed flaps on the top and bottom. The exact difference depends on the board construction — single-wall, double-wall, or triple-wall — and the flute profile used.

How to Calculate Outer Dimensions

To convert inside dimensions to outer dimensions, add twice the board caliper to the length and width (accounting for two walls on each axis). For depth, the calculation depends on whether the top and bottom are closed with flaps (which add board thickness) or remain open as in an HSC.

For example, a single-wall C-flute box with a board caliper of approximately 5/32 inch will have outer dimensions roughly 5/16 inch larger than the inside dimensions on the length and width. For double-wall construction, the difference is greater. Your packaging supplier can provide exact outer dimensions for any given box specification.

Efficient pallet patterns depend entirely on outer dimensions. A difference of even a quarter inch in one direction can change whether boxes fit within the pallet footprint or overhang the edge — a condition that causes damage, instability, and rejected shipments. Outer dimensions also determine how many boxes fit on a shelf in warehouse racking and how many units a trailer can carry.

Freight carriers increasingly use dimensional weight pricing, where shipping cost is based on the volume of the package rather than its actual weight. Accurate outer dimensions are essential for calculating dimensional weight and optimizing freight costs. Even a small reduction in outer dimensions — achieved by selecting a thinner board profile or tighter box design — can yield meaningful savings across high-volume shipments.
