What Is Lithographic Lamination?

Lithographic lamination — commonly known as litho-lam — is a corrugated printing method that produces photo-quality graphics by bonding a pre-printed lithographic sheet onto corrugated board. A flat sheet of paper or lightweight paperboard is first printed on a lithographic (offset) press at high resolution using CMYK process colors and spot colors. The printed sheet is then laminated (glued) to the surface of a corrugated blank, creating a package that combines the structural strength of corrugated with the visual impact of high-end lithographic printing.

How Litho-Lam Compares to Other Methods

Standard flexographic printing applies ink directly to the corrugated board surface, which limits resolution because the uneven corrugated surface absorbs ink unevenly. Litho-lam avoids this limitation entirely — the printing is done on a smooth sheet before lamination, so the final image is sharp, vibrant, and capable of reproducing photographic detail, fine gradients, and precise brand colors.

Compared to digital printing, litho-lam is more cost-effective at higher volumes because the lithographic press runs efficiently at scale. However, digital printing is better suited for short runs and variable data applications where litho-lam’s plate and setup costs would be prohibitive.

Common Applications

Litho-lamination is the go-to method for retail-ready packaging where shelf presence drives sales. Club store packaging, point-of-purchase displays, premium consumer electronics boxes, food and beverage multipacks, and cosmetics packaging all frequently use litho-lam construction. The process also supports coatings and finishes — including UV gloss, matte varnish, and soft-touch — that further enhance the visual and tactile experience.

Many die-cut retail boxes and end-load shelf cartons rely on litho-lam to deliver the brand impact that consumers expect on store shelves.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is litho-lam in corrugated packaging?

Litho-lam is a process where a pre-printed lithographic sheet is laminated onto corrugated board, delivering photo-quality graphics with the structural performance of corrugated packaging.

When should I use litho-lam instead of flexo?

Use litho-lam when your packaging requires photographic images, precise brand colors, fine detail, or premium finishes. Use flexo for simpler graphics, text, and barcodes at lower cost.

Can litho-lam packaging include special finishes?

Yes. Litho-lam supports a range of coatings and finishes including UV gloss, matte varnish, spot UV, embossing, and soft-touch lamination for a premium look and feel.
